In order to keep your thyroid healthy, there are different minerals which you can consume.  These minerals may be found in the food you eat or they are readily available as supplements over the counter.  The main minerals which help in promoting healthy thyroid are iodine, selenium, zinc and copper.

  1. Iodine. Iodine is usually the first mineral which comes to mind when talking about thyroid health.  This mineral is important in the production of thyroid hormones.  Iodine, 75% of which is ingested, goes to the thyroid gland and facilitates the production of triiodothyronine and thyroxine.  These hormones are responsible in the regulation of energy and metabolism.  Some sources of iodine are seafood, kelp and iodized salt.
  2. Zinc. One of the main functions of zinc is to facilitate the normal development of an individual on various stages of life.  Most importantly, this mineral aids in the proper functioning of the thyroid.  It is known that an excess of thyroxine or inactive T4 hormone leads to an under active thyroid gland which results to hypothyroidism.Zinc is known to facilitate in the conversion of inactive T4 hormone or thyroxine into active T3 hormone or triiodothyronine.  This brings balance and overall health to the thyroid.  Apart from pill supplements, zinc can also be found in egg yolks, liver, oysters, lamb, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.
  3. Selenium. Selenium is also an important mineral in maintaining a healthy thyroid.  This mineral helps in the conversion of the thyroid prohormone which is T4 into the cellularly active hormone which is T3.  In addition to that, it degrades the triiodothyronine into diiodothyronine or T2.Moreover, selenium acts as antioxidant which helps in protecting thyroid from damage which can result to cancer.  A deficiency of this mineral can also worsen current hypothyroidism condition.  So aside from supplements bought over the counter, selenium can also be found in shellfish, liver and kidney.  However, you should also be aware that excessive selenium can be toxic.
  4. Copper. Copper also plays a vital role in promoting healthy thyroid.  Deficiency of this mineral can result to hyperthyroidism.  Copper is important in hormone production and absorption plus regulation of thyroid metabolism.   This mineral promotes thyroxine hormone production yet preventing its over-absorption in the blood cells.

In addition to that, copper are needed in phospholipids which are required for the production of Thyroid Stimulating Hormones.  This will help in preventing formation thyroid problems and treating thyroid diseases.
