Understanding Thyroid Gland Hormones

Thyroid hormones are developed through the thyroid gland, which is situated at the bottom area of your neck, underneath your Adam’s apple. The thyroid gland encircles nearly the trachea and its shape looks like a butterfly. This tiny gland is very essential in a lot of body functions.

Hypothyroidism

The thyroid gland employs iodine which is regularly acquired from foods like seafood, bread and salt.  Iodine is useful in developing thyroid hormones which consist of thyroxine and triiodothyronine.  These two hormones are in charge of thyroid hormones which are found in your blood.  On the other hand, T3 or triiodothyronine hormone is considered as the hormone with extreme biological action.  As soon as T3 is discharged from the thyroid gland in the blood, a wide sum of T4 is altered into T3. The T4 is the lively hormone which is responsible for the metabolism of cells.

The Chain of Command of Thyroid Hormone Alteration

The pituitary gland found in the brain is the controlling part over that of the thyroid gland. Alternatively though, the pituitary is also partly controlled by the thyroid through the so-called feedback system effect of the thyroid hormone. The hypothalamus is also a precursor to this feedback system.

The hypothalamus is the one responsible in discharging another hormone described as thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH).  The TRH is also the one which transmits signs to the pituitary to discharge the thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH. The TSH will also transmit signs to the thyroid to discharge thyroid hormones.  If disturbance will happen at each of these levels, a deficiency in the development of thyroid hormone may cause hypothyroidism.

Sources and Causes of Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is regarded as an extremely ordinary illness.  It is approximated that around 3% to 5% of the whole inhabitants worldwide are affected by some type of hypothyroidism.  This condition usually affects women more than men and its occurrence accelerates as one grows older. Some of the illnesses and medications that may result to hypothyroidism are:

  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.  This is the most usual source of hypothyroidism, particularly in the United States.  This type of thyroid disorder is termed from Dr. Hakaru Hashimoto who discovered it in the year 1912.  The most common symptom of this cause of hypothyroidism is enlarged thyroid gland or most popular known as goiter.
  • Lymphocytic Thyroiditis.  This source of hypothyroidism is due to the inflammation produced by a certain kind of white blood cell identified as lymphocytes.  This thyroid illness usually occurs following pregnancy.
  • Thyroid destruction secondary to radioactive iodine or surgery.  This kind of treatment used for hyperthyroidism can damage thyroid tissue which can result to hypothyroidism.
  • Pituitary or Hypothalamic disease.  This is also another source of hypothyroidism which results from the reduced level of T4 and T3 circulation.
  • Pituitary Injury.  This is an outcome of brain surgical procedures. It may also result from insufficient blood supply in the region.
  • Serious iodine insufficiency.  Iodine insufficiency is very prevalent in some parts of the world which can result to serious hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism can only be solved if you know all the causes behind it. It is quite sad to note that it is often complicated by other forms of illnesses in the body.
