Tinnitus Devices – 4 Gadgets to Consider in Curing the Condition

Tinnitus devices are great gadgets that can help provide the relief for tinnitus. These are sold in the market, some recommended by doctors while some not. Some of these devices for tinnitus also gained recognition in the market. Although there are several kinds of tinnitus devices, here are four of the most often used instruments, their usage and their effectiveness.

Device for Tinnitus # 1 – Neuromonics

The main target of this Neuromonics Tinnitus treatment is to break the negative cycle of tinnitus disturbance. This acoustic therapy should be done with a six-month program of education, support and monitoring from a certified audiologist. This process takes a long term treatment which includes the attempt to reprogram the brain through de-sensitizing it so as to filter out the sounds of tinnitus.

In here, researchers believe that the problem rely on the person’s reaction to the perception of tinnitus and not the tinnitus itself. This also involves the emotional centers of the brain’s limbic system that controls emotions which leads to disturbance. Upon removal of the negative connections attached to tinnitus perception, the disturbance of tinnitus will surely decrease.

The first thing to be done in this treatment is performing comprehensive personalized assessment of the patient’s tinnitus profile. This profile is needed to program the Neuromonics Processor. This processor has two high-end headphones which produce acoustic stimulation across a broad spectrum of sound. This sound stimulates audio pathways in the brain reducing the relative loudness of the single frequency tinnitus. The patient is required to listen to the device everyday for 2 – 3 hours. This program takes six months to complete and costs around $5,000.

Device for Tinnitus # 2 – Ti-Ex Tinnitus Therapy Device

This is a portable device developed by an Austrian electronics engineer, Gerald Neuwirth. Mr. Neuwirth once had tinnitus and had not relief with any therapy. He then developed this handheld device that directed electromagnetic energy into the cochlea. Upon using of this device for ten weeks his tinnitus symptoms disappeared.

The theory in here is that electromagnetic waves stimulate and regenerate damaged hair cells. This device is available in Europe and costs 290-490 Euros or approximately $390-$650 US dollars.

Device for Tinnitus # 3 – TinniTool

This had been developed by Dr. Lutz Wilden in Germany and makes use of the theory Low Level Laser therapy (LLLT).  They make use of auditory processes which require energy in the form of adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP).  Biologists considered ATP as the energy currency of life because it stores the energy we need for our daily activities. This is produced by the mitochondria in the cells within the inner ear and throughout the body.

Once the cochlea is over-strained, it also affects the sensory cells and will lose their functional capacity because of lack of ATP. Dr Wilden was able to produce biological reaction by the use of LLLT. This therapy benefits patients suffering from early stage of tinnitus.

Dr. Wilden uses two separate laser beams for the mastoid bone which are calculated to penetrate into the cochlea from behind the ear. He also uses a third beam aimed down the ear canal. Ten sessions are being done within 10-14 days and each session is about 60 minutes. This portable TinniTool is available in the United Kingdom and it costs 270 British Pounds or about $540 US dollars.

Device for Tinnitus # 4 – Tinnitus Phase-Out System

This device was developed by Dr. Daniel S. Choy and therapy can be accomplished at home. This therapy is advised for patients with pure-tone tinnitus in which the frequency of the sound does not vary. Patients should be examined thoroughly so as to know if the condition is serious or not. After which their tinnitus is evaluated and matched to both frequency and loudness.

The patient’s tinnitus tone is being reproduced and processed through a proprietary computer program. The sound phase shifts from 360 degrees in 6-degree increments every 30 seconds. The sound is completely shifted every 30 minutes and is effectively totally out of phase with the patient’s tinnitus for 1/3 the total time. In this case the sound cancels out the tinnitus sound and tinnitus is not heard.

The phase shifted sound can be burned into a CD so that it can be played for the patient at the Tinnitus Control Center.  It is only after 4 sessions when the patient can decide if it is helpful in reducing tinnitus. The patient can also buy the CD so that he can use at home. The cost of the program is $850 which includes the evaluation and 4 treatment sessions. The CD, on the other hand costs more at $1,500.00.
